How to Get from Duluth Airport to Ely

Start with the airport and your final destination

Duluth International Airport uses the code DLH. When requesting a transfer, specify the airport rather than simply saying Duluth: a downtown pickup and an airport pickup are different arrangements. Give the provider your flight number, arrival date and the address where you need to go.

Ely tourism places the city roughly 115 miles from Duluth. Your exact road distance depends on your pickup point and route. Allow roughly two to two and a half hours for the road journey as an initial planning estimate, then confirm timing with your driver. Baggage collection, weather, road works and intermediate stops require additional time.

An Ely town stop is not the same as arriving at a lakeside lodge or wilderness entry point. Identify that final leg before choosing airport transportation.

Compare your transportation options

The right choice depends on party size, the length of your stay and whether you will use a vehicle after reaching Ely. Obtain a quote for both directions before committing.

Arrange an existing transfer before flying

Ely tourism advises contacting outfitters in advance about airport shuttles. Spirit of the Wilderness also advertises transportation services. Contact providers directly for availability and a current quote; a listed service does not guarantee a driver for every flight.

Ask whether the quoted rate is per vehicle or per passenger. Confirm the meeting point, waiting time allowance and what happens if the flight is delayed. If your party arrives on separate flights, ask whether everyone can travel together and how waiting time is charged.

Do not assume an on demand ride will be available for a long airport journey. A written confirmation with the pickup time and provider contact details gives you a much firmer plan.

Leave space around flight connections

For a northbound trip, work backward from your outfitter appointment or lodging arrival time. A late flight may make an overnight stay more practical than trying to collect equipment and enter the wilderness that evening.

For the return, allow time to leave the water, meet your outfitter, return rented gear and travel to DLH. Add the airport arrival buffer recommended by your airline. Avoid a plan that only works if every stage runs exactly on time.

Tell the driver what you are bringing

Passenger capacity and gear capacity are different. List large duffels, backpacks, fishing rod cases, paddles and coolers when requesting a quote. Ask specifically about child restraints and accessibility requirements if relevant. Canoes and kayaks require a separate agreement.

Keep the driver’s contact information available offline. Share your accommodation address with your group, and confirm the return arrangement before leaving for the wilderness.
